About Sofia
Sofia Vega is an innovative music composer with a diverse background in classical and South American folk music, currently wanting to collaborate in new media and artistic projects

Sofia Vega is a Colombian composer and arranger based in the DFW area, Texas. With a foundation in classical music, Sofia initially trained as a violinist before discovering her passion for composition. Since then, her work is a unique blend of Western classical and South American folk music, and her pieces have been recorded and performed at the University of North Texas, both by the Concert Orchestra ensemble and the Jazz Strings Lab.
Through her music, Sofia strives to collaborate with artists from diverse mediums to musicalize their projects and create unforgettable music that leads to the success of every production.
Sofia arranges and composes music for audiovisual projects, film, TV shows, art galleries, and dance performances. She is driven by her mission of creating music that resonates with people's hearts, inspires their minds, and encourages them to explore beyond their current reality.

Sofia's interest in film scoring has led her to develop different projects related to the media. In December 2023, she developed a rescore for the short film “Subway Love”, which was performed by the Jazz Strings Orchestra in collaboration with the Forum for Media Music at UNT, and under the guidance of Dr. Drew Schnurr.
Likewise, Sofia writes for various ensembles including orchestras, string quartets, chamber music and jazz orchestra. She received mentorship from musicians of the highest caliber including Dr. Sungji Hong and Kirsten Briberg Soriano, who gave her the knowledge and guidance to compose her first orchestral piece “Harlequin Watz” inspired by Joan Miro’s painting “The Harlequins Carnival” (1925). This piece was performed by the University of North Texas Concert Orchestra ensemble in May 2024.

In November 2024, she developed a rescore to different scenes from the Disney film “Encanto” (2021), inspired by Colombian culture and traditions. Through this project, Sofia seeks to share her own interpretation of Colombian folk music and Western classical music, creating her own approach to these genres and breaking the boundaries of classical orchestral music.

Sofia recently graduated with a Bachelors of Music Composition with a minor in Music Business from the University of North Texas. Everyday she misses her cat, family, and the landscapes of her home, Colombia. However, she is able to feel its magic and connection through her day-to-day life as a musician and her peers.
